The Nine Stars
Taking an accurate directions is essential for the success of any Feng Shui audit.  Based on the directions, you will be able to plot the Flying Star chart of the property.
House Facing
Trying to determine the house facing vary from school to school.  The way I determine the house facing is, I look for the brightest and busiest part of the house.  Simply looking for the door when trying to determine the house facing will not give you an accurate audit.  As I've mentioned above, look for the most "YANG" side of the house.  Usually the Yang side would be the area of the house that receives the most light or Qi.  It is common to see houses facing the backyard and the back door facing the road/street.  The same method apply to apartments.  You need to locate the most Yang area of your apartment.  For instance, my mother-in-law lives in a tower and I plotted the flying star chart using her balcony as her facing since it receives the most light.  Her main door is located in a hallway near an elevator and it receives no light and there isn't much activities going on unless somebody enters through the front door.  Looking out the balcony, you can see cars and passersby throughout the day and the same area of the house receives plenty of sunshine.
Taking the Directions
Once you've determined the facing direction of the house, you should stand parallel to the wall/door or glass windows to take the directions.  Make sure you are using a compass that will give you the degrees, then refer to the 24 Mountains chart (remember SW1, SW2, SW3).

If the main door is on the same side as the facing of the house, stand in front of the main door [looking out] to take the reading.  If, on the other hand, the main door is not on the same side as the facing of the house, you need to stand at the center of the front facing side to take the direction.
Plotting the Chart
Knowing the facing and the sitting of your home, you are now ready to plot the flying star chart using the floor plan of your house or a drawing if a floor plan is not available.  Let's continue:

1.  The first thing you need to to is draw a 9 x 9 square on your floor plan (see figure below).

2.  Then you need to determine your house
period

3.  After determining your house period, you can start
flying the stars
4.  If you find that flying the stars yourself to be confusing, you can refer to the
house periods table.

5.  Once you've plotted all the stars on your floorplan, you can check the
nine stars to read your chart.
